TRÉ AKULA

What Changed Me?

My name is Tré Akula & I’m a multi-hyphenate creative based in Toronto. I am currently working as the Creative Producer & Editor for BULLY magazine which is a print & online publication for unheard voices and unseen perspectives at the intersection of Art, Fashion & Culture. The moment that changed my life didn’t exactly happen the way I imagined.

After taking some time to really reflect on this question, I realized that there are many many moments over the course of years that have led me to where I am today. For me, it’s really important to dispel this idea that there is ONE moment that has the ability to change your life forever.

Instead, I think it’s more realistic to focus on all the decisions (big or small) in each moment that over time has the ability to shape your future.

No one decision is more important than the other,
even though they may vary in impact

they all contribute to the larger picture: thinking about change in this way feels less overwhelming.

To put this into context, my work with BULLY magazine is a perfect example of this. Whether the task at hand is deciding on a theme for an upcoming print issue, or conceptualizing an idea for a fashion editorial or even selecting final images for an IG post, my ability to make these decisions in any given moment has directly informed my creative practice.

Having the space and time to consistently be making these types of decisions over and over and over again has given me the gift of creative confidence and for that I am very grateful.

A guiding philosophy for my work is

“The secret to success is found in your daily routine”.

This still rings true for me today as it did years ago when I first discovered it.
